Four international coaching profiles, four football philosophies, and one increasingly competitive title race in the 2026-27 ADNOC Pro League.
The opening weeks of the 2026-27 ADNOC Pro League have put four clubs at the centre of the title race: Al Jazira, Al Ain, Shabab Al Ahli and Al Wasl. Behind them stand four of the most decorated UAE Pro League coaches in years, with careers spanning Europe, South America, the Gulf and Asia.
After five matchweeks, Al Jazira and Al Ain lead with 13 points each, while Shabab Al Ahli and Al Wasl have 10 points each. Here is who is in charge of each club, and what they bring.
| Coach | Club | Nationality | Points after 5 matchweeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmin Olăroiu | Al Jazira | Romanian | 13 |
| Vladimir Ivić | Al Ain | Serbian | 13 |
| André Jardine | Shabab Al Ahli | Brazilian | 10 |
| Rui Vitória | Al Wasl | Portuguese | 10 |
1. Cosmin Olăroiu – Al Jazira

Romanian, born 10 June 1969
Few coaches know Gulf football as well as Cosmin Olăroiu. He took over Al Jazira in June 2026 on a contract until 2028, after his spell as UAE national team coach ended in May 2026.
From Steaua to the Gulf
Olăroiu made his name at Steaua Bucharest, winning the Romanian league and Super Cup and reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 2006. At Al Hilal he won the Saudi league and two Crown Prince Cups between 2007 and 2009, then won the Qatar Stars Cup with Al Sadd in 2010.
In the UAE, he led Al Ain to back-to-back league titles in 2012 and 2013. At Shabab Al Ahli he won more domestic honours and reached the 2015 AFC Champions League final. He also led Saudi Arabia at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.
In China he guided Jiangsu Suning to their first Chinese Super League title in 2020. Back in the UAE, he won the inaugural AFC Champions League Two with Sharjah in 2025, which led to his appointment as UAE national team coach in April 2025.
What he brings to Al Jazira
Olăroiu knows the league, its players and its pressure better than almost anyone. In a tight title race, his experience of managing decisive moments could make the difference for the “Pride of Abu Dhabi”.
Defining achievement: league titles in four countries, plus continental success with Sharjah.
2. Vladimir Ivić – Al Ain
Serbian, born 7 May 1977
Vladimir Ivić starts 2026-27 as the coach of the reigning champions. Since arriving in February 2025, he has led Al Ain to the 2025-26 ADNOC Pro League and UAE President’s Cup double, and the club has extended his contract until 2028.
A career built across European football
Ivić won the Greek Cup with PAOK in 2017 and added further domestic titles before moving to England, where he coached Watford in the Championship in 2020.
He then managed Krasnodar in the Russian Premier League from January 2023 until 2024, before arriving in the UAE.
What he brings to Al Ain
Defending a title is a different challenge from winning one: every opponent prepares specifically for you. Al Ain’s unbeaten start in the league and two wins from two in the AFC Champions League Elite suggest Ivić’s side are handling that pressure well.
Defining achievement: the Greek Cup with PAOK and the 2025-26 UAE double with Al Ain.
3. André Jardine – Shabab Al Ahli
Brazilian, born 8 September 1979
André Jardine was appointed by Shabab Al Ahli on 17 June 2026, replacing Paulo Sousa. He arrived with one of the most impressive recent records of any coach in world football.
Olympic gold and a historic run in Mexico
Jardine led Brazil to men’s football gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, played in 2021. At Club América (2023-2026) he won three consecutive Liga MX titles: Apertura 2023, Clausura 2024 and Apertura 2024.
He also won the Campeón de Campeones, the Mexican Super Cup and the Campeones Cup in 2024. Before that, he built his reputation developing young players at São Paulo.
What he brings to Shabab Al Ahli
Tournament experience matters in Asia, where preparation time is short and single games decide campaigns. Shabab Al Ahli have won both of their AFC Champions League Elite matches under Jardine, including a 2-1 win away at Al Ittihad.
Defining achievement: Olympic gold with Brazil and a Liga MX three-peat with Club América.
4. Rui Vitória – Al Wasl

Portuguese, born 16 April 1970
Rui Vitória brings title-winning experience from Portugal, Saudi Arabia and international football to Al Wasl.
Benfica, Al Nassr and Egypt
Vitória first won the Portuguese Cup with Vitória de Guimarães in 2013, the club’s first. At Benfica (2015-2019) he won two consecutive Portuguese league titles, the Portuguese Cup, the League Cup and two Super Cups.
In Saudi Arabia, he led Al Nassr to the 2018-19 Saudi Pro League title and the Saudi Super Cup. He later coached Spartak Moscow, the Egypt national team from 2022 to 2024, and Panathinaikos in 2024-25.
What he brings to Al Wasl
His Al Nassr title proves he can win in Gulf football. Al Wasl already showed their level with a 2-2 draw away at Al Ain in Matchweek 5. The question is whether they can sustain it over 26 rounds.
Defining achievement: back-to-back league titles with Benfica and the Saudi title with Al Nassr.
Four Coaches, Four Career Paths
| Coach | Club | Major career achievements |

| André Jardine | Shabab Al Ahli | Olympic gold, three consecutive Liga MX titles |
| Rui Vitória | Al Wasl | Two Portuguese titles with Benfica, Saudi title with Al Nassr |
These records are not direct measures of coaching ability: each coach worked with different squads, budgets and competitions. Together, they show how international the UAE coaching landscape has become.
The Tactical Challenge of the 2026-27 Season
With only three points separating the top four, the title race will turn on more than reputation:
- Consistency: avoiding dropped points against lower-ranked teams.
- Squad management: rotating across league, cup and Asian fixtures.
- Tactical adaptability: responding when opponents set up specifically to stop you.
- Continental commitments: balancing the league with the AFC Champions League Elite.
The next test comes in Matchweek 6 (16-18 October): Shabab Al Ahli host Al Ain, Al Wasl visit Bani Yas and Al Jazira travel to Kalba.
Football Translator’s Verdict: Many Languages, One Dressing Room
The top four coaches speak Romanian, Serbian, Portuguese and Spanish as working languages, and lead squads that mix Emirati, Arab, European, African and South American players. Their tactical ideas only work if every player understands them the same way.
